Kalahandi Organisation for Agriculture and Rural Marketing Initiative (KARMI) “Kalahandi Organization for Agriculture and Rural Marketing Initiative (KARMI) came in to existence in the year 1995. Form at by some energetic youths with the humble motive to help the poor, understand the dehumanization process in the society and become conscious of their own self and take the appropriate action for developing the life quality of the tribal and downtrodden especially the woman and children. By analyzing the socio-economic and political problem of the society and promotion of agriculture the main livelihood of Kalahandi as a prime chapter with agriculture and rural marketing growth to help people and development awareness and education but subsequently community capacity building and sustainable health improvement also considered as a main motive of the organization. To make Kalahandi as model to utilize the recourses stop distress migration, hunger and starvation death. The mission of KARMI as to undertake, promote or organization socio welfare educational and developmental activities aim at living condition and generate socio , economic , civil and moral conditions of the people particularly of weaker sections of the community without discrimination of cases , creed and religion .
The journey of KARMI was started from Golamunda block of Kalahandi district with support of Agragamee one of the leading organization of Odisha to promote the tribal and rural development and than become KARMI will be a independent organization since 1997. In a nutshell, the struggle against issues was the struggle for Socio- Economic rebirth of the community. The focal group of the organization are scheduled tribe, scheduled caste, women, children, landless laborers, rural artisans and other weaker sections of the society. KARMI began its intensive effort and various initiatives, systematic effort to identify the real causes & opposed to spread of several myths about distress & deprivation in the operational areas opened a new chapter for people’s action. Some committed youth were united together, Through their sincere and active cooperation Yubak Sangha and Nari Sangha were formed.
To establish a just, sustainable and participatory society by utilising the local available natural resources and services where each individual will live with dignity and self respect.
KARMI has been functioning with appropriate programme indigenous style of implementation and generate a greater level of people participation.
KARMI ‘s structure is basically built upon the strong foundation-keeping people and village as the center of the focus. The problems identification, planning process, the appraisal of the resources, the implementation, monitoring, the evolution and above all the accountability starts with the people /organization. The village committees are instrumental in taking key decision. The animators, Shrimik Sathi, volunteers and the community health workers area the king pin the process of action reflection relation to his, her own village and neighbor villages facilitate the decision making of the village committees. The activities the village committees and animators are controlled by the field centers. The field/cluster is manage by a field/cluster coordinators who has the training and orientation to establish a good rapport and a dynamic communication with the animators and village committee to initiate a people to organization process and ensure their full participation in the implementation and monitoring. All the field center/cluster office located strategically to reach out to the most backward pocket of the project and take responsibility. Now KARMI operates its activities in three projects as Golamunda and M.Rampur blocks of Kalahandi district. The head office of KARMI is situated at Mahaling in Goalmunda block of Kalahandi district and a project office as well the Coordination Office at M.Ramapur in M.Rampur block. All the project coordinators are the in charge of the block /Project having two or three field coordinators who are in charge of the G.Ps . All the field coordinators are also supported to provide two ways linkages with the animators/community and the programme coordinator. The programme coordinators are the in charge of implement all the programme. The secretary guides the programme coordinator. Secretary of KARMI legally responsible for the management of KARMI. And the Secretary is the secretary of the Governing Body and General Body has a lot of constitutional responsibility like producing Annual Report and the Progress Report and utilization certificates of the projects implemented by KARMI in time.
(i) Non-formal and Adult education for non-literate people in the age group of 15 to 35 years.
(ii) Accelerated total women literacy project covers 9000 woman in the age group of 15 to 35 years with support of Ministry of Human Resource Development Govt. of India & National Literacy Mission.
(iii) Qualitative Tribal Education for Tribal Children in the age group of 5 to 12 years where there is no Govt. school or other educational facility covered 560 children with support of Indo-German Social Service Society (IGSSS) New Delhi.
(iv) Library Programme : KARMI continue its library programme to in reach the education facility to children, New literate Adult & Women, Researchers and Academician cover with support of Rajaram Mohan Library Foundation through Department of Culture, Govt. of Orissa.
(v) Residential Care Centre for the boys and girls of migrants who have gone to other states for getting employment .KARMI undertake 10 residential care center in most migrant prone villages and 400 student are staying there with education and health facility with support of OPEPA, and American Indian Foundation (AIF) U.S.A.
(vi) Educational exposure, visit, exhibition, popularization of science among the rural children and organize Balmela, Children fair to educate the children of primary & upper primary level
AGRICULTURE, MARKETING & LIVELIHOOD :
(i) Formation of grain bank, community fund and its proper management for insure food security of poor, marginalized and target groups.
(ii) Promotion of 150 self help groups and trained with management, fit with different trades after vocational training covers 3000 women of needs with support of Mission Shakti, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Build Co-operative and linkage with Govt. Financial Institutions & Banks.
(iii) Through formation of Farmer's Club KARMI organized farmers training on agriculture, horticulture, pisciculture and vocational training, management of Natural Resources as forest protection, soil conservation and land and water management with the concept of watershed with support of Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology, (CAPART) Department of Rural Development Govt, of India.
(iv) Constructed 2 Diversion based irrigation project with support of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and provide irrigation and drinking water facility, develop backyard firm, and kitchen garden in 2 villages in Golamunda block of Kalahandi district.
(v) Undertakes Migration programme for imporveing the condition of Migrant workers of Golamunda and M.Rampur block and provide ID facility, helath, legal and financial improvement, skill building and placement in destination and cover 11000 migrant workers family.
COMMUNITY CAPACITY BUILDING
(i) Formation and empowerment of issue based community based organizations in village and cluster level and build up a strong networking with the Regional Resource Center and Para Legal-workers programme.
(ii) Empowerment of women, tribal and rural farmers on literacy, legal right advocacy through women resource center, protection of human right, legal aid and legal literacy programme.
(iii) Promotion of SHG, Co-operative and linkage the rural market with other big institutions through empower Farmers Club and vocational trainings with support of NABARD, Mission Sakti, and Utkal Gramya Bank
(i) Health awareness among the women, rural poor and develop the community health through sanitation programme, kitchen gardening and immunization.
(ii) Bare-foot health manager and community health clinic management working 10 bear foot health manager in remote inaccessible pocket of Golamunda Block of Kalahandi District, where Govt. health service could not reach, Reproductive Child Health Programme in remote pocket, Promotion of kitchen gardening ,farmers Training, and TBA Programme with support MISEREOR, Germany since 2005.
(iii) AIDS awareness and control programme for Migrant labor, adult cense boys & girls and sex workers and settlement through IGP & SHG.

N.B :- 10 Bare foot health workers and 12 Volunteers has been working in the project area and part of the KARMI staff.
KARMI would work in close collaboration with the partner organizations like AMA SAMITI, Mahaling, Lok Adhikar Samukhya, Bhawanipatna and Kalahandi Khaydya Adhikar Avijan Bhawanipatan on various issues related to strengthening civil society organization and fulfilling proper concerns. The Consortium of NGOs of Kalahandi, AVIJAN fight for exploitation education, health and management of natural resources will also provide necessary guide to KARMI to implement the project.
KARMI over a period of time had built up its capacities as a facilitator of development processes in the most remote e and inaccessible regions of Kalahandi district in Orissa. Accordingly it has developed its skills and expertise having a term of committed and professional staff of facilitate the process initiated by the organization.
AMASAMITI a registered women organization in the project area has been working for social and economic empowerment of community in general and women particular over a period of more than a decade. In course of time it has successfully handled a number of issues concerning the right of poor and marginalized communities ,livelihood issues etc.Loka Adhikar samukhya, kalahandi is an alliance of more than 60 NGOs working in different corners of Kalahandi district of Orissa. .The objective of LASK is to rise pro-poor issues i.e. rights of people, land entitlement, smooth implementation of govt. welfare measures benefiting the various sections of society. Kalahandi Khadya Adhikar Abhija is an association of civil society organization facilitating campaign for right to food in the district. This has conducted public hearings on Rights to food and ensuring Govt. machinery to be responsive to the right to food and livelihood issues of the vulnerable group.

Health programme :
In the last phrase of the project “Community health management in Golamunda block of Kalahandi district “ project supported by MISERIOR, Germany KARMI has been able to achieve the following achievements. The health awareness and health education among the target people has developed through conduct 340 village Health awareness Camps which covered 41 villages in 8 G.P. of Golamunda block covers 30103 people.
In the project supported by National Education Group New-Delhi” Qualitative Tribal Educating project in Inaccessible pocket of Golamunda Block of Kalahandi District”. By this project in KARMI covered only 10 villages and the total population of the villages are 5324 and the total nos. of students in the age group of 6 to 14 is 605 by 4 new innovative schools and 6 Govt. primary school which are not functioning properly here KARMI undertook the Education project for the period of 3 years and took steps to decrease the dropout rate and properly functioned the government primary school. By the project in 3 years we organized 190 village meetings where total 10640 villagers attained those meeting and got awareness on education and ensure participation of good and qualitative education. Total no of 456 students got qualitative education and check the dropout rate and 247 students had been admitted to the upper primary school,. After competition of the project the villagers also continuing the innovative school in their own fund . In the project period we conducted 12 nos. of teachers training where 15 teachers got regular qualitative training and improving the teaching quality. The teaching and learning material provided by the project help the poor students to continue their study and encourages them in the learning. The programme has develop a critical look of the common man towards formal school teachers and their activities.

Promotion of Self-help Group. make literate 9000 women belonging to the age group of 15 to 35 year within a short period of one year in the operational area of KARMI with support of National literacy Mission, New Delhi and Govt. of India ,Ministry of Human Resource Development and able to see the ability of the organisaion in the Kalahandi district . KARMI formed 145 women Self-help group and able to give proper training and management to their SHG group sand able to generate fund of Rs 450000 in two branch of Utakal Gram Bank in Mahaling and Keogoan branches.
